Real versus Faux versus Dried

I thought I would write a blog about real, faux and dried flowers and discuss the Advantages and Disadvantages of each one.

Real Flowers in arrangements:

Real flowers are flowers that are alive that have been cut to be used in floral arrangements.

Advantages

  1. Natural Beauty: Real flowers showcase the diverse and stunning beauty of nature. Their intricate shapes, vibrant colours, and delicate petals can lift your spirits and create a visually appealing environment.

  2. Mood Booster: Studies have shown that the presence of real flowers can positively impact our mood and emotions. Being surrounded by flowers can reduce stress, anxiety, and even promote feelings of happiness and well-being.

  3. Aromatherapy: Many flowers emit pleasant scents that can act as natural aromatherapy. Certain fragrances, like lavender, are known to have calming effects, while others, like citrus blossoms, can be uplifting and energizing.

  4. Air Purification: Real flowers can help improve indoor air quality by absorbing certain pollutants and releasing oxygen. They act as natural air purifiers, making the air in your home or workspace fresher and healthier.

  5. Connection with Nature: Having real flowers indoors can help create a stronger connection with nature, even if you live in an urban environment. Their presence reminds us of the beauty and wonder of the natural world.

  6. Thoughtful Gifts: Giving real flowers as gifts is a thoughtful and heartfelt gesture. They can convey a wide range of emotions, from love and appreciation to sympathy and support.

  7. Boosting Creativity: Surrounding yourself with flowers can stimulate creativity and encourage artistic expression. Many artists, writers, and designers find inspiration in the beauty of flowers.

  8. Promoting Social Bonds: Sharing or receiving flowers can strengthen social bonds and foster positive relationships. They are often used to celebrate special occasions, express gratitude, or simply show someone that you care.

  9. Supporting Local Businesses: Purchasing real flowers supports local florists and flower growers, contributing to the local economy and promoting sustainable practices.

  10. Celebrating Life Events: Real flowers play a significant role in various life events, such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and funerals, symbolizing joy, love, and remembrance.

Disadvantages

1. To be honest the only disadvantage of real flowers in my book is that eventually they wilt and die, but that's why its so important to appreciate them whilst they are alive.

2. Maintenance: Keeping real flowers fresh requires some effort. You need to change the water regularly, trim the stems, and remove wilted flowers to prevent the spread of decay.

3. Allergies: Some people are allergic to pollen or certain flower scents. Real flowers can trigger allergies and cause discomfort for those with sensitivities.

4. Expense: High-quality or exotic flowers can be quite expensive, making them a luxury that not everyone can afford on a regular basis.

5. Real flowers can be impacted by weather conditions, e.g. in hot summers flowers are susceptible to wilting

Faux Flowers

Faux flowers, also known as artificial or fake flowers, are synthetic replicas of real flowers made from various materials such as silk, plastic, or paper. These flowers are designed to imitate the appearance of real blooms

Advantages

  1. Longevity: One of the main advantages of faux flowers is their durability. Unlike real flowers, they don't wither or wilt, allowing you to enjoy their beauty indefinitely.

  2. Low Maintenance: Faux flowers are virtually maintenance-free. You don't need to water them, trim their stems, or worry about changing the vase water.

  3. Allergen-Free: Since faux flowers do not produce pollen or have scents, they are a great option for people with allergies or sensitivities to real flowers.

  4. Seasonal Availability: Unlike real flowers that may be limited to certain seasons, faux flowers are available year-round, making it easy to find your favourite blooms anytime.

  5. Cost-Effective: While the upfront cost of high-quality faux flowers can be higher than real ones, they save money in the long run since you don't need to replace them regularly.

Disadvantages

  1. Lack of Fragrance: The downside of faux flowers is that they do not have the natural fragrance that real flowers offer, which can be an essential factor for some people.

  2. Potential for Dust Accumulation: Faux flowers can accumulate dust over time, requiring occasional cleaning to maintain their appearance.

  3. Limited Variety: While faux flowers come in a wide range of species and colours, the variety may still be somewhat limited compared to the vast diversity of real flowers.

  4. Plastic Waste: Cheap and low-quality faux flowers made of plastic can contribute to plastic waste, which is a concern for the environment.

  5. Movement and Appearance: Faux flowers do not have the same movement as real flowers and can look as if they are not real (although I have to say that I think they are very good now).

Dried flowers

Dried flowers are natural flowers that have been intentionally dried and preserved to maintain their shape, colour, and beauty. The process of drying flowers removes most of their moisture, allowing them to retain their appearance and often extending their lifespan.

Advantages

  1. Longevity: Dried flowers can last for an extended period compared to fresh flowers. With proper care, they can retain their beauty for several months or even years.

  2. No Maintenance: Once dried, these flowers require minimal maintenance. There's no need to water them or change the vase water.

  3. Versatility: Dried flowers can be used in various decorative projects, including floral arrangements, wreaths, potpourri, and crafts.

  4. Seasonal Availability: Dried flowers allow you to enjoy the beauty of certain blooms year-round, even when they are out of season.

  5. Eco-Friendly: Drying flowers is a natural preservation method, and it reduces the need for artificial preservatives or chemicals.

Disadvantages

  1. Fragility: Dried flowers are more delicate and brittle compared to fresh flowers. They can easily break or crumble if mishandled, which can limit their usability in certain applications.

  2. Fading Colours: Over time, the colours of dried flowers may fade, especially if they are exposed to direct sunlight. This can lead to a less vibrant appearance, reducing their visual appeal.

  3. Dust Accumulation: Dried flowers are prone to collecting dust, which can affect their appearance and may require regular cleaning to maintain their beauty.

  4. Limited Scent: Dried flowers lose their natural fragrance during the drying process, so they lack the pleasant aroma that fresh flowers offer.

  5. Not Suitable for All Flower Types: Some flowers do not dry well and may not retain their shape, colour, or texture effectively. Certain flowers are more suitable for drying than others.

  6. Seasonal Availability: While dried flowers offer year-round availability for certain blooms, not all flowers dry well, which can limit the variety and availability of dried flower options.

  7. Limited Freshness: While dried flowers do not wilt like fresh flowers, they still have a limited lifespan. Over time, they may become more brittle and lose their original appearance.

So what's the answer? I think at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference and what you are looking to achieve in your floral messages. For example if you are looking for natural flower scents then it's best to opt for real flowers. If you are looking for something durable that will stay the same regardless of heat then faux flowers is probably the best option. If you're looking for a vintage durable look then dried flowers are a great choice.

Here at The Floral Trojan we will work with you to help understand the event/occasion that you want the flowers for and ask you questions to help work out the best options. I personally love a mixture of all 3, especially real and faux, am I being greedy?, LOL. An example of a mix of all 3 could look like this: a dried floral headdress/crown for a wedding, mixed with a real bridal bouquet and arrangements of real and faux flowers. At The Floral Trojan we are able to arrange real, faux and dried therefore the beautiful choice is up to you!
